Most of the ceramic products you use in your daily life are made using molds (though, of course, some are handmade). Yet, the reality is that very little is known about these molds that are so essential to ceramic production. We have created a video demonstrating how these molds are made—a process that is vital to making ceramics but rarely seen or understood. There are various methods for forming ceramics using molds, such as pressure casting, mechanical forming, and slip casting. Pressure casting utilizes molds for both the front and back surfaces of the vessel; the piece is formed by injecting slip (liquid clay) through a small opening known as the casting inlet. A key feature of this method is its versatility, allowing for a wide range of shapes—including square, irregular, and handcrafted-style designs—beyond just round vessels.
