Characterized by a continuous series of swirl-like patterns around the rim, they are said to have earned the name "horse-eye plate" because the designs resemble the eye of a horse. With a thick, substantial form, they were primarily used as everyday tableware. While the patterns are typically painted using iron glaze, the use of an incised relief technique (*horitsuke*) accentuates the boldness of the design, creating a versatile piece suitable for both Japanese and Western table settings.
